IRCC has tightened visitor extensions and Super Visa approvals since 2024, particularly for applicants whose "ties to home country" documentation is thin or whose funds don't clearly support a long stay.

For parents and grandparents on a TRV, the Super Visa (10-year multi-entry, 5-year stays) is often a stronger long-term solution than PGP - and requires a specific medical insurance product and financial threshold that catches many applicants out.

Visitor Record extension

Currently in Canada as a visitor, applying before status expires, and providing evidence of purpose of extended stay + funds + ties to home country.

Super Visa

Parent or grandparent of a Canadian citizen or PR. Sponsor must meet a minimum income threshold (LICO-based). Applicant must carry Canadian medical insurance meeting IRCC's minimum requirements.

Status change (visitor → worker/student)

Possible from inside Canada in specific circumstances - notably for spouses of workers/students with a valid job offer or DLI acceptance.

Restoration of status

Must be filed within 90 days of losing status. You cannot work or study during the restoration period.

WHERE FILES FAIL

Not always possible. TRVs can be refused on re-entry attempts, and land-border flag-poling has tightened. Inland extension is usually the safer path if you already have status.

Super Visa insurance that doesn't qualify

IRCC requires specific minimum coverage from a Canadian insurer (or approved foreign insurer). A generic travel policy from home country is refused on the spot.

The 90-day restoration window is strict. Miss it and the only option is to leave Canada. We track this to the day.

How long is a visitor extension usually granted for?+

Officers typically grant 6 months at a time, sometimes tied to a specific event (a wedding, a birth, a family medical situation). Multiple extensions are possible if the underlying reason continues.

Can my parents work in Canada on a Super Visa?+

No. The Super Visa is a visitor visa - long stays are permitted but employment is not authorized.

Is Super Visa better than PGP?+

Depends on the goal. Super Visa is faster and doesn't require winning the PGP lottery, but it doesn't grant PR. Many families run Super Visa while waiting for a future PGP intake.
